The Completely Free E-mail Update #1
Issued Jul 8, 1997
Welcome to the first edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added a great many new freeware programs and made some rather drastic changes to the site. Drop on in and take a look and then write back and tell us what you think. Please feel free to forward a copy of this update to a friend.
Some of the new programs we've added over the past week include the following (in no particular order):
FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS
CT TimePiece
A desktray item designed to replace the regular Win95 clock which resides in the desktray with one that includes the date. While you can place your cursor over the Win95 time and get the date, that is nowhere near as convenient being able to read both at a glance. CT Timepiece is a tiny download at only 5k. Get it from:
W95 Desktop Utilities
CountDown 97
A great novelty program with will give you the count up or count down from any date you wish to give it - in years, months, weeks, days, hours and seconds. It will also tell you the total number of weekends, days, hours, minutes and seconds to (or from) that event. How many weekends have you enjoyed (well, had) in your life? Ask CountDown 97. Did you know there were 129 weekends to the year 2000? A 380k download which you can get from:

WebFerret
One of the handiest Web-related products we've found. Use it to look for something across multiple search engines -- and then have it save the results of your search for later. For instance, if you wanted to do a search on 'completely free software' you could enter those words in the window, hit the start button, and WebFerret would check with the 10 search engines (plus two 'veronica' search engines) listed for their results. These include all the 'biggys' - AltaVista, Yahoo, Infoseek, etc. We use it constantly, and we bet you do too. Get it at:

ScreenSaver Starter
Want password protection on your screensaver? Want to have the screensaver start immediately you boot up so your screen is automatically protected with a password? Need to kickstart your screensaver so you can leave your desk without your screen's contents being seen? Then you need ScreenSaver Starter, a minuscule 5k download. Get it at:
W95 Desktop Utilities
HomeSite 1.2
We can't make up our minds which HTML editor to use - but this is our current favorite. Only thing it doesn't do is allow for multiple documents to be loaded (a really bad point for us). However it does support colored tags, customizable toolbars, colored text & backgrounds, different fonts - it even adds the size element to images. Worth the 504k download 10 times over. Get it at:

Bible Plus
This is an excellent Authorized (KJV) Bible program with a terrific search engine that covers both Old and New Testaments. Not a small download at 3MB but well worth the wait. Get it at:
W95 General Programs
Anansi HTML editor
An object-oriented HTML editor with quite a few extra features. probably not for everyone but if you haven't tried HTML authoring before and you want an 'all in' package which is quite sophisticated, then this might be for you. The download is a reasonable 691kB and you can get it from:
W95 Internet Related
IrfanViewer32
IrfanViewer is an excellent graphics viewer/converter which can handle a very large range of image types (including Kodak's Photo-CD) . It has a preview option, Drag&Drop support, fast directory view, slideshow, print option and more. Claimed to be one of the first graphic viewers worldwide with multiple-GIF, multiple-ICO and multipage-TIFF support. It's a 277kB download which you can get from:
W95 General Programs
Net Vampire 2.0
Net Vampire 2.0 is an FTP and HTTP client for unattended file download. Ideal for those who have low-quality connection to Internet but need to download large files. It allows you to download files from FTP, HTTP and Gopher servers, and to restart the download at current position for both FTP and HTTP protocols, if the origin server supports it. It will also automatically remove error messages some proxies embed in received data, specify several files to download, etc. And this is free? The download is 1MB and you can get this wonder program from:

FREE WIN3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS
Icon Clock
A small simple program for those who want an ionized clock. With only a 3kB download it worth the look. Get it from:
W3.1 & DOS
VirusBuster Lite
Shareware (but free for non-commercial use) virus signature scanner which will warn you if you get a bug in your computer and give you the option to delete it. Not as fancy as its big brother, never-the-less it does provide some degree of warning if someone sneezes on your computer. The download is a respectable 310kB and you can get it from:
W3.1 & DOS
Anansi HTML editor
An object-oriented HTML editor/ftp program which is quite sophisticated in its own right (see also under Win95 freeware, above). The download is only 673kB and you can get it from:
W3.1 & DOS
The Other Internet Package
This is a beta version of a soon-to-be-released commercial HTML authoring set of tools. Go have a look at the website and decide for yourself if it's something you can use. The program is a hefty 2MB download and you can get it from:
W3.1 & DOS
Columbine Bookmark Merge (v2.9)
This little ripper works with the major browsers and enhances their bookmark features. Reads the bookmark/favorites' files and can convert Netscape to MSIE and vice versa, sort them alphanumerically, make you a coffee (well, almost!) and is all things to all people. Seriously, CBM is a powerful utility for anyone with Windows 3.11 or higher (but Win32s is not needed). It's a 710kB download and you can get it from:
W3.1 & DOS
VARIOUS FREEWARE RESOURCES
MS TrueType 'core' fonts
Microsoft has just updated its 'core' fonts which it wants everyone to have on their computers to assist with compatibility. The fonts include the old favorites, Arial, Arial Black and Times New Roman, but also includes Comic Sans MS and a terrific newbie called Webdings. Most are available directly from the 'Completely Free Software' site in Win 3.1, Win 95 and Macintosh versions and are, you guessed it, completely free! Get your Microsoft Freebies from:

GIF Wizard
Are your GIFs too fat and lazy? Do they take an hour for your visitors to download? Then go visit 'GIF Wizard' and lose a few pounds. We gave 50 images a work over and they came back almost exactly one third slimmer than before (a total of 303kB reduced to 205kB). Just aim GIF Wizard at your website and it will chew through your images, suggesting the reduction each should get. When you click on to one of those suggestions, you get the full GIF Wizard work over and the same image offered in numerous 'trimmed down' forms. Select which one you want (usually the slimmest) and you can download the ammended image back to your hard drive. Next time you're uploading, just include the new images to replace the fat ones you've been using. Easy. To try out GIF Wizard for yourself, go to:

WebNovice Online
We've finally found a site which will take you through the learning stage of being an HTML-authoring newbie and give you the skills to become a master WWW craftsperson (one must be politically correct, musn't one!). We all have to learn sometime, and it's nice to find a site which leads you through the whole website creation business, easily. Go see if WebNovice Online (or one of the other HTML tutorial sites listed) can help you create a masterpiece:

FINALLY
For anyone using the Eudora Light e-mail program, there has been an update to version 3.0.2. The 4.3MB download includes both 16 and 32-bit versions in one (wish they'd separate them to make the download a bit smaller) and now has a new plug-in feature called 'PureVoice'. Get upgraded by visiting:
